Holocene Clean Energy is renewable energy company based out of Raleigh, NC. Holocene Clean Energy provides expertise in construction, finance and technology to meet the needs of commercial clients around the United States. Holocene Technologies designs and fabricates custom, commercial grade solar thermal systems. The flagship product of the company is the Fluid Handling System (FHS), and integrated system that provides storage, controls, pumps, heat exchangers, insulation, weatherization, and web-based monitoring.

As the lead engineer for a small manufacturing company, I was responsible for the mechanical and thermal design of solar thermal fluid handling systems. Responsibilities of this role included:

• Working directly with clients to determine system specifications
• Sizing components to meet the client’s needs by modelling solar production for each facility
• Design for fabrication:
  • Preparing CAD drawings and piping layouts for manual fabrication
  • Developing CAD/CAM solutions for cutting sheet metal with CNC plasma cutter
  • Designing wiring diagrams for controlling each system
• Quality control:
  • Developing protocol to inspect each system prior to shipping
  • Complying with UL 508A standards for Industrial Control Panels
• Developing custom controllers and data collection systems to remotely monitor energy production
• Onsite troubleshooting of Fluid Handling Systems during installation or in response to warranty claims
